Antelopes and bustards
Velavadar
,
India
Established in 1976 as a sanctuary for Blackbuck, this compact 34 km2 reserve now contains one of the largest populations of the antelope in the world. Successful conservation programs are also in place for the Indian Wolf and the Lesser Florican, an endemic bustard that used to be found throughout the country, but whose numbers have been reduced in recent years. The reserve also offers very good chances of spotting the Striped Hyena. Large numbers of Common Cranes roost here and utter a thunderous roar as they congregate.

DAY

Lions of the forest
Gir Forest
,
India
Drive through grassland habitat on the way to the Gir Forest National Park, home to the only surviving population of Asiatic Lions, the only wild lions outside of Africa. Conservation and breeding efforts have allowed the population to rise from about 20 in 1913 to over 400 today. We’ll have morning and afternoon drives that to observe the lions engaging in different behaviours. Gir is also home to a large population of Leopards, which tend to frequent the more heavily wooded patches of the reserve. Sambar, Chital and Wild Boar are choice prey items for large cats and roam the woodlands in good numbers.
