Set off inland to the vast ruined city of Anuradhapura, one of the most sacred places in Sri Lankan Buddhism. Hop on bicycles to explore this ancient city. Feel the stillness of the ruined bell-shaped stupas, crumbling temples, and magnificent sculptures. Cycle the rural roads in the Sigiriya area, passing through villages and paddy fields. Climb to the top of the Rock Fortress for a spectacular panorama of the surrounding jungle.

Depart Sigiriya for Matale, travelling first to the well-preserved Dambulla Cave Temples, dating from the 1st-century BC, and containing some of the country's most iconic and evocative examples of religious art. Visit a private spice garden to learn about the great variety of spices grown here followed by a delicious traditional lunch served in the paddy fields. Enjoy a two-night stay on the edge of the gorgeous Knuckles Mountain Range, named for its uncanny likeness to human knuckles and home to stunning hiking trails.
